Choosing the Right Bracket for Your Awning Projection (2.5 m, 3.5 m, 4 m)
Awning projection is the single biggest driver of bracket duty. The further the fabric and arms reach from the wall, the larger the lever arm — and the higher the tension your fixings must resist when the wind catches a fully extended cassette. Pick the duty for the projection first, then adjust for wall type and exposure.

Why projection decides the bracket
An awning is a cantilever. At 2 m projection the moments are manageable on sound solid brick with a light cassette. At 3.5–4 m the same wall can see several times the fixing tension in a gust — especially on a south- or west-facing elevation, a coastal plot, or a full-cassette unit that presents a larger sail area.
Spreader brackets keep that load within what masonry and chemical anchors can safely carry by distributing tension across a wider fixing pattern. Duty steps up with:
- Projection — the lever length out from the wall
- Cassette size and weight — full cassettes load the bracket harder than open folding-arm systems
- Exposure — open sites, hills and coastal wind multiply dynamic load
- Wall quality — cavity leaves, rendered block and weak top courses need spreading earlier
Obstacles (gutters, pipes, reveals) change which family of bracket you need — spreader, gutter, pipe or extender — but they do not replace matching duty to projection. See the complete guide to awning brackets for those families.

If the projection sits on a boundary (for example a 2.6 m arm on an exposed gable), step up a duty. Underspecifying costs far more than the upgrade when a top course fails in a storm.
Up to 2.5 m projection — Standard Spreader
Use the Standard Spreader Bracket when:
- The awning projects up to 2.5 m
- You are fixing into masonry that needs load spreading (cavity, extension, rendered wall, or weak top course)
- The elevation is not unusually exposed
This is the everyday workhorse for patio and conservatory awnings in typical UK suburbs. Stainless steel construction, made to your A/B/C dimensions, with a flat-to-wall concealed fixing. If the wall is solid brick, sheltered, and projection is well under ~2 m with no obstruction, a direct top-fix can still be viable — but as soon as the top course or cavity leaf is in play, use a spreader.
Step up early if the site is coastal, the wall is soft or sandy mortar, or the customer has ordered a heavier full-cassette unit even at a shorter projection.
Around 3 m projection — Heavy Duty Spreader
Move to the Heavy Duty Spreader Bracket when:
- Projection approaches or reaches 3 m
- The elevation is more open (corner plot, hillside, large garden with little shelter)
- You want thicker plate and a stronger fixing pattern without going to Ultimate duty
Thicker stainless plate and welded webbing handle the higher moment loads that appear once arms push past the Standard range. This is the practical upgrade path for installers who regularly fit mid-size cassette awnings on two-storey houses and modern extensions.
3.5 m to 4 m projection — Ultimate Spreader
Specify the Ultimate Heavy Duty Spreader Bracket when:
- Projection is in the 3.5–4 m band
- The awning is a full cassette with a large closed sail area
- The install is exposed, coastal, or two-storey with significant wind fetch
- Twin or shared geometry puts extra demand on each upright
Ultimate duty is engineered to keep per-fixing loads within chemical-anchor capacity when the lever arm and wind load are at their highest. Do not try to stretch a Standard or mid-duty plate into this range — the failure mode is not gradual; it is pull-out of the top fixings.
Projection is not the only filter
Match duty to projection first, then check these modifiers:
Wall and mounting line
- Gutter in the fixing zone → use a gutter / bungalow bracket (or heavy duty gutter for larger awnings), sized with the same projection mindset.
- Downpipe or soil pipe in the way → pipe bracket.
- Sill, reveal or deep eaves → extender bracket.
When in doubt, upgrade one duty
Installers rarely regret specifying one step heavier. They do regret a callback after the first Atlantic low. If projection, cassette weight and exposure all sit on the high side of a band, choose the next duty up.
How to specify your set
- Read the awning projection from the manufacturer’s spec (arm length / fabric reach), not from a rough patio measurement alone.
- Note width, cassette type and colour.
- Photograph the wall, gutter line and any obstacles.
